Shravan Mela at Deoghar: a devotee’s complete guide

Every year, in the month of Shravan (July–August), Deoghar transforms. Lakhs of saffron-clad kanwariyas fill the roads, chanting Bol Bam, and Babadham hosts what is often called the longest religious fair in the world — a full month (sometimes two, in Malmas years) of unbroken pilgrimage.

The kanwar yatra: Sultanganj to Babadham

The heart of Shravan Mela is the kanwar yatra. Devotees collect Ganga jal at Sultanganj in Bihar — where the Ganga flows north — and carry it in decorated kanwars on their shoulders, walking roughly 105 kilometres barefoot to Deoghar to pour it on Baba Baidyanath. The jal must not touch the ground for the entire journey.

Types of kanwariyas

• Sadharan kanwariya: walks the route over 2–4 days, resting at camps along the way.
• Dak Bam: completes the entire yatra non-stop, within 24 hours, without ever pausing — the most demanding vow of all.
• Khade Bam: vows not to sit or lie down for the whole journey.

When should you come?

Mondays of Shravan (Shravani Somvar) are the most auspicious — and the most crowded, with waits that can stretch many hours. If you seek a calmer darshan, choose a mid-week day early in the month. Devotees who cannot handle heavy crowds — the elderly, families with small children — often visit just before or after the Mela instead, and offer their Shravan sankalp through a pujari.

Practical tips from Deoghar pujaris

• Travel light: phones and shoes must be deposited outside the temple; carry as little as possible.
• Book your stay early: hotels and dharamshalas in Deoghar fill up weeks before Shravan begins.
• Guard your health: walk in the cooler hours, keep ORS with you, and respect the queue system (the "arghya" line arrangements) at the temple.
• Beware of touts: deal only with pujaris you know or have verified. A genuine pujari will never rush you or demand money mid-darshan.
